Why My Dyslexia Is Awesome!

A few years ago, this post would be very different, geared towards the challenges I faced, however I have learnt to accept and embrace it, because it’s who I am. I can’t say I haven’t faced issues, because believe me when I say, I have had my fair share. It has caused late nights, stress, arguments, tears and a crippling fear of writing birthday cards. But here I am writing a blog… who would have though. Dyslexia, a learning disability that affects reading, writing, and spelling skills, has often been associated with challenges. And throughout growing up, I was surrounded by a culture of negativity and isolation. It was so easy to get caught up in the ‘bad’ side of it. However, I have come to appreciate the advantages that this unique perspective brings to the workplace. In this reflective piece, I will explore the strengths and advantages that my dyslexia offers, the impact it has had on my professional journey, and the valuable lessons I have learned from embracing these advantages.

Enhanced Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking:

Dyslexia has encouraged me to develop strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It has been coined that dyslexics see the world differently, and for me, this means I have often had to find alternative ways to approach tasks and overcome obstacles. This process has fostered creative problem-solving abilities and the capacity to think critically outside of conventional norms. I have learned to analyse situations from different angles, identify underlying patterns, and explore innovative solutions. This advantage has allowed me to contribute unique perspectives and innovative ideas in the workplace, ultimately driving positive outcomes.

Attention to Detail and Accuracy:

Dyslexia has sharpened my attention to detail and enhanced my focus on accuracy. As a dyslexic individual, I have learned to meticulously review my work, double-check details, and ensure precision in my tasks. It has taught me the impact and importance of the small details. This heightened sense of attention to detail has proven valuable in roles that require thoroughness, quality control, or data analysis. I have developed the ability to identify subtle inconsistencies or errors that others may overlook, contributing to improved accuracy and quality in my work.

Enhanced Communication and Listening Skills:

Dyslexia has nurtured my communication and listening skills. To compensate for challenges in reading and writing, I have become adept at actively listening and absorbing information through oral communication. This skill has allowed me to genuinely engage with others, empathise with their perspectives, and build strong connections. Additionally, my dyslexia has taught me the value of clear and concise communication. In my efforts to avoid written challenges, I have become a storyteller, which is a great leadership asset to have. I have developed the ability to distill complex information into easily understandable concepts, facilitating effective communication with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.

Resilience and Perseverance:

Dyslexia has instilled within me a deep sense of resilience and perseverance. Overcoming the obstacles associated with dyslexia has required determination and a willingness to persist despite setbacks. Getting through University was the toughest test I have faced, and set the foundations for my personal and professional resilience. This resilience has equipped me with the ability to handle pressure, adapt to change, and maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations. I have learned to embrace failures as learning opportunities and to bounce back stronger. This advantage has helped me navigate through demanding work environments and provided me with the stamina to tackle complex projects with unwavering determination.

This was not meant to be a 'hey look how great I am' but this is me reflecting on the advantages of my dyslexia in the workplace, I have come to recognise the unique strengths and skills that it has cultivated within me. My dyslexia has empowered me with enhanced problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, effective communication skills, and unwavering resilience. Embracing these advantages has allowed me to make valuable contributions, approach challenges from a fresh perspective, and build strong professional relationships. By fostering an inclusive work environment that celebrates neurodiversity, we can unlock the full potential of individuals with dyslexia and other learning differences, creating diverse and innovative teams that thrive in today's dynamic world.
