My Ever Changing Coaching Style

Coaching is a great privilege, and a complex and intricate, ever changing dance. In this reflective blog, I will delve into my own experiences as a coach and explore various coaching styles that have influenced my practice. By reflecting on these styles, I aim to gain insights into their strengths, limitations, and the impact they can have on client-coach relationships.

The Directive Coaching Style:

One coaching style that has resonated with me is the directive coaching style. In this approach, the coach takes on a more authoritative role, providing specific guidance, instructions, and solutions to the client. Initially, I found myself drawn to this style, as it offered clear direction and quick solutions to client challenges. Especially, when I have found myself in highly stressful, life and death situations. We are all told we are products of our environment, and growing up this was the type of leadership I looked up to, and when it came to developing my own style, I quickly looked in this direction. However, upon reflection, I realized that excessive directiveness may hinder client autonomy and personal growth. In order for someone to be able to develop their skills and take on coaching instruction, I believe they have to have the capacity for learning, and if stressed and feared, this approach cannot make the best learning environment. While this style can be effective in certain situations, such as skill acquisition or urgent decision-making, I have learned the importance of balancing direction with empowering the client to find their own solutions.

The Facilitative Coaching Style:

The facilitative coaching style, characterized by active listening, powerful questioning, and creating a safe space for exploration, has profoundly impacted my coaching practice. This style emphasizes the client's autonomy and self-discovery, allowing them to explore their thoughts, values, and beliefs. I have witnessed the transformative power of this approach, as clients often uncover their own solutions, gain deeper insights, and experience a sense of empowerment. Guided discovery is However, I have also recognized the need for skillful facilitation, as it requires keen observation, patience, and the ability to hold space for the client's growth without imposing personal biases or judgments.

The Transformational Coaching Style:

The transformational coaching style focuses on facilitating profound shifts and personal transformation in clients. This approach often involves exploring limiting beliefs, challenging assumptions, and inspiring clients to embrace change and growth. Personally, I have found this style to be deeply rewarding, as I have witnessed clients undergo remarkable transformations and achieve breakthrough results. However, I acknowledge that this style requires a high level of trust, rapport, and sensitivity to the client's readiness for change. It is crucial to create a supportive environment and ensure that clients feel secure and supported throughout their transformational journey.

The Co-Active Coaching Style:

The co-active coaching style places equal emphasis on the client's agenda and the coach's role in supporting their growth. It is a collaborative approach where the coach and client work as equal partners in the coaching process. This style resonates with my belief in the client's innate wisdom and potential. By embracing this approach, I have witnessed the power of co-creation and the impact of building a strong alliance with clients. However, it is important to maintain professional boundaries and navigate the fine line between collaboration and enabling dependence on the coach.

Exploring various coaching styles has enriched my understanding of the diverse approaches and methodologies within the coaching profession. Through reflection, I have come to appreciate the strengths and limitations of different coaching styles, recognizing that each style has its place based on the needs, preferences, and goals of clients. As a coach, I aim to embrace a flexible and adaptive approach, drawing from different styles to best serve my clients' unique journeys. By continually reflecting on my practice and staying attuned to the evolving needs of my clients, I strive to refine my coaching style and create impactful and transformative coaching experiences.
